The NIGHT BLOOMING JASMINE (Cestrum nocturnum) is considered the flower with the strongest scent. Nocturnum refers to its night blooming schedule. This flower blooms only at night and emanates a sweet scent when one is around to experience it. Many say that it is worth staying up late and walking to the flower to experience it scent.
One may experience the scent by smelling jasmine perfume, or the frangrance oils used for aroma therapy.
The flower was discovered by Ragbhir Singh Ubhi in the late 19th century while he hiked through a West-Indies forest, for he noticed the sweet aroma from a distance.
The night blooming jasmine is known in India as Chambeli. The night blooming jasmine was loved by Mumtaz Mahal (the chosen one of the palace), the 3rd and favorite wife of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. Mumtaz Mahal would wear this fragrance when she walked through her gardens that were planted with her favorite flowers, while the shah watched and adored her. He had fallen in love with her when they first met and this love never waned. Several pictures of her show her holding a flower. This was a perfect and sweet love story. The shah adored her endlessly. When she died during the birth of their 14th child he had a mausoleum, the Taj Mahal (crown of palaces), built of pure white marble in her memory in Agra, India. The rich and powerful can live this way while being served by multitudes of unfortunates.
There is no surviving record of what his other two wives thought of all this.
