In ancient Greek mythology Adonis was loved by Persephone and by Aphrodite. Once Adonis was enjoying a wild boar hunt when he was wounded by a fierce boar. Greek male-type gods seemed to pass their time hunting boar. Aphrodite heard his cries of anguish and rushed to his side and, in deep despair, watched him bleed to death. From the deep and painful wounds made by the boar's tusks blood sprayed all over the ground. Red anemones sprang from the earth where the drops of Adonis' blood fell.
Another version of the Greek take says that his blood landed upon white anemones and turned them blood red.
The roots of the Canada anemone (Anemone canadensis) were used medicinally by Native Americans. The anemone is of the buttercup family.
