cereus is a genus of cactus. The name comes from Greek and Latin words meaning wax or torch.
The cereus blooms at night. The writer's maternal grandmother had one that was referenced in one of her poems. One variety of Cereus blooms once each year. Here is her poem entitled "the Approach of Life's Twilight:"
When the twilight of life is approaching
And I sit in the fireside's glow;
Memory like a golden thread
Back over the years will go.
I'll remember things of beauty
A cereus that bloomed at night:
A cob-web with dew bejeweled
A fir tree clothed in white.
The fragrance of my roses,
The smile on the face of a child;
A painting of baby Jesus
With Mary so sweet and mild.
The sound of the organ at twilight,
The memories will never end;
And one that I'll hold as precious
Is the thoughtfulness of a friend.

The cereus is found in an animated film entitled Wolf's Rain. They are referred to in the film as the Lunar Flower. That flower would lead the wolves to paradise.
