Giant kelp is the fastest growing of all algae. It will grow two feet a day and reach a height of 148 feet. These sea weeds grow in what are called kelp forests for there are so many growing together in certain locations. Fish and an variety of other sea creatures can find protection in this forest of kelp.
Giant kelp is held upright because of the gas-filled bladders at the bases of their leaflike blades.
A cone-shaped arrangements of branching extensions, called a holdfast, anchors the kelp to rocks. These look much as exposed roots; however, they do not provide nutriments for the giant kelp.
