Believe it our not NASA* wishes to send plants to the moon in 2015! If the seeds grow in their small dishes or trays their growth will be compared with the growth of similar seeds here on earth. The plants will include seeds of basil, turnip, and flowers (Arabidopsis (rock cress), a small flowering plant related to cabbage and mustard.) It has small whitish flowers on stems. The seeds will be monitored from 5-10 days to see if they germinate.
All this will aid in the preparation for a moon habitat for a colony there in which new residents of the moon can grow their own food. Want volunteer for the colony?
NASA can build habitats that will contain an earth-like atmosphere, which will shield the plants against radiation. This shouldn’t cost us too much?! However, the gravity of the moon is weaker than that of earth. This will be an uncertain factor. Will the plants grow extra tall?
Sir John Herschel, 1st Baronet, British astronomer, mathematician, chemist, photographer, biologist and inventor wrote articles that appeared in the New York Sun newspaper. These were believed for he was well-respected in the various above-mentioned sciences. He a wrote that, using his "telescope of vast dimensions and constructed by a new principle," he found, while looking at the moon, "…a steep shelf of basaltic rock, greenish in color and thickly covered with bright red flowers that precicely resemble the Popavaer rhoeas (poppy)…" Many of his Yale brethren and some professors continued to believe his hoax.
One might choose to Google Sir John Herschel and read of this Moon Hoax in which he discovered bat-like humanoids on the moon, as well as strange animals including biped beavers, blue unicorns. He even found planets in other solar systems--all this back in 1835! Remember astronomy was quite young then. What we wish to point out is that there were, in his far fetched story, people who wanted to learn what was "out there." There were red poppies on the moon, according to Sir John Herschel. Believe it or not. The writer would chose not to; not that he has been there and had not found them.
*NASA stands for National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Those who have studied the Hebrew language may know that the Hebrew word, nasa, means: to lift a heavy load. This Hebrew word is here in English letters. It is interesting that NASA lifts heavy space going rockets. Was all this a coincidence?
