Venus flytrap is an insectivorous plant that is native to subtropical wetlands on the east coast of the United States. There are other carnivorous plants such as the Pitcher plant.
the Venus flytrap is the most common and most well known.
The binomial of the plant is Dionaea muscipula. Dionaea for Diana or Venus, the seductive goddess of love who, in this case, lures insects in to its jaws of death. An insect, once inside, stimulated delicate trigger hairs causing the door of the plant to close in 100 milliseconds.
Muscipula is Latin for mousetrap!
Many do not know that this plant, if healthy, will produce a five petaled white flower in spring.
