Vikings loved to invade Ireland, Scotland and other countries in the spring. This was a type of spring break ritual. Scotland has a plant that slowed the progress of the Vikings on their raiding adventures--Ireland did not possess such a detriment.
This plant was the wild thistle that grew in patches. This allowed the Scots to escape. It is for this reason that the wild thistle is named the national flower of Scotland.
Once an invading Viking army attempted to sneak up at night while the Scottish army was sleeping. When one barefooted Viking stepped upon a thistle and let out a loud cry the Scottish army was alerted.
The thistle is the symbol of the Order of theThistle. This is a high chivalric order of Scotland. It is also a Celtic symbol of nobility of charaacter and of noble birth. It is used as a symbol in other areas of Scottish life.
Pleny the Elder taught that the thistle could grow hair on bald heads.

Pliny the Elder, a Roman naturalist among many significant disciplines, believed that thistles could cure baldness. However, he did not say what to do with them.Roman Emperor Tiberius only had his hair cut during a full moon otherwise he would become bald. We may suppose that, since one planting by the signs can plant nothing during a full moon, a hair cut would be in order.
